Psalm 93

¹The Lord reigns,^(A) he is robed in majesty;^(B)
    the Lord is robed in majesty and armed with strength;^(C)
    indeed, the world is established,^(D) firm and secure.^(E)
²Your throne was established^(F) long ago;
    you are from all eternity.^(G)

³The seas^(H) have lifted up, Lord,
    the seas have lifted up their voice;^(I)
    the seas have lifted up their pounding waves.^(J)
⁴Mightier than the thunder^(K) of the great waters,
    mightier than the breakers^(L) of the sea—
    the Lord on high is mighty.^(M)

⁵Your statutes, Lord, stand firm;
holiness^(N) adorns your house^(O)
for endless days.

A Prophecy Against the King of Tyre

28 The word of the Lord came to me: ²“Son of man^(A), say to the ruler of Tyre, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘In the pride of your heart
    you say, “I am a god;
I sit on the throne^(B) of a god
    in the heart of the seas.”^(C)
But you are a mere mortal and not a god,
    though you think you are as wise as a god.^(D)
³Are you wiser than Daniel^[a]?^(E)
    Is no secret hidden from you?
⁴By your wisdom and understanding
    you have gained wealth for yourself
and amassed gold and silver
    in your treasuries.^(F)
⁵By your great skill in trading^(G)
    you have increased your wealth,^(H)
and because of your wealth
    your heart has grown proud.^(I)

⁶“‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘Because you think you are wise,
    as wise as a god,
⁷I am going to bring foreigners against you,
    the most ruthless of nations;^(J)
they will draw their swords against your beauty and wisdom^(K)
    and pierce your shining splendor.^(L)
⁸They will bring you down to the pit,^(M)
    and you will die a violent death^(N)
    in the heart of the seas.^(O)
⁹Will you then say, “I am a god,”
    in the presence of those who kill you?
You will be but a mortal, not a god,^(P)
    in the hands of those who slay you.^(Q)
¹⁰You will die the death of the uncircumcised^(R)
    at the hands of foreigners.

I have spoken, declares the Sovereign Lord.’”

The Stoning of Stephen

⁵⁴When the members of the Sanhedrin heard this, they were furious^(A) and gnashed their teeth at him. ⁵⁵But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit,^(B) looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.^(C) ⁵⁶“Look,” he said, “I see heaven open^(D) and the Son of Man^(E) standing at the right hand of God.”

⁵⁷At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him, ⁵⁸dragged him out of the city^(F) and began to stone him.^(G) Meanwhile, the witnesses^(H) laid their coats^(I) at the feet of a young man named Saul.^(J)

⁵⁹While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”^(K) ⁶⁰Then he fell on his knees^(L) and cried out, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.”^(M) When he had said this, he fell asleep.^(N)

8 And Saul^(O) approved of their killing him.

The Church Persecuted and Scattered

On that day a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered^(P) throughout Judea and Samaria.^(Q)
